During September 2011 & August 2012 Jim & Katie Thomsen anchored their sailboat Tenaya in Port Resolution on the remote island of Tanna in Vanuatu. During those months they spent much of the time in the villages. One of the most important events is the Circumcision Ceremony.
Toka Ceremony - Tanna Island, Vanuatu - October 11th, 2012. This video was taken soon after sunrise when the first group of men started the Toka dance. The three day Toka Festival on Vanuatu's Tanna island is one of Vanuatu's major cultural events. This festival is a symbol of alliance between different tribal groups, gifts are given, marriages arranged and new tribal chiefs are announced. The ceremony begins with women dancing all night, surrounded by men who are waiting for dawn to come so they can take their place. At sunrise, the Toka dance begins followed by a pig killing ceremony.

Cyndy is from Vanuatu, so there were no doubt that she and her Australian-man Matt would get married here. They brought their crew from Australia together with family and friends from Vanuatu and celebrate their love at the paradise island Erakor. May 5, 2017: Another #superstorm has erupted and is strengthening in the South Pacific to a projected Category 4 Cyclone as it dances between Vanuatu and New Caledonia stirring up some VERY tall waves! Forecast track for Tropical Cyclone "Donna" has changed and the cyclone is now expected to pass between Vanuatu and New Caledonia over the coming days. Forecast models are still in disagreement but it seems Vanuatu might be spared of a direct hit. Nevertheless, the effects will be felt across the country and it will all depend on how far away the center passes.
